Frequently Asked Questions What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural and safe state of mind. In simple terms, hypnosis is a temporary state of altered awareness in which the conscious mind is passive and the subconscious mind is alert and responsive. Hypnosis is a technique that allows an individual to bypass the critical factor of the conscious mind; and allows the establishment of acceptable selective thinking through the use of the subconscious mind. All hypnosis is fundamentally self-hypnosis. In the hypnotic state, you are enabled to reject your erroneous beliefs and accept new, more healthy and empowering ones. Hypnosis is the means used to communicate between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Is Hypnosis approved by the American Medical Association? Hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Association and used in the field of medicine since 1958. Hypnosis is also recognized by the American Dental Association. It is seen as a very valuable tool (modality) in making desired beneficial changes within the mind-body-spirit connection. Because hypnosis is safe and excepted wellness modality, many leading medical and dental schools are currently teaching hypnosis courses. Can hypnosis help me? How Effective is hypnosis? Hypnosis is very effective, but it is not magic. Hypnosis is a tool to help the individual succeed. The rate of success depends on the individual subject and how intent he or she is on achieving the goal. The more determined a person is at achieving a goal, the more hypnosis will be effective in assisting them. Can anyone be hypnotized? Nearly everyone can experience some degree of hypnosis -- a conservative figure would be somewhere above 90% of the population. People that respond well to hypnosis are intelligent, open to learning and have the ability to relax and concentrate. If I respond, does that mean I’m gullible? No. On the contrary, individual subjects that respond well to hypnosis are intelligent, open to learning and have the ability to relax and concentrate. Could I do something or say something against my will? No. there is no way for the hypnotherapist to dominate a subject unless the subject freely chooses to give up the control to the hypnotherapist. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. The individual subject is always in control of the session. If a suggestion given is contrary to any belief, the subject could immediately terminate the session. Can I get “stuck” in hypnosis? No one has ever gotten “stuck” in hypnosis. That is a myth promoted by movies, books and other media sources. Unfortunately, it has made people weary about hypnosis. Since all hypnosis is self hypnosis, the subject decides when to terminate the session. Will I have amnesia? You will remember everything that takes place during the hypnosis session. As you become more comfortable with hypnosis and develop your capabilities to experience deeper states of relaxation, you may be able to experience hypnotic amnesia if you choose to. Please remember it is your choice. You are always in control of the session. Once hypnotized, will I be able to resist hypnosis in the future? Yes. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. If you choose not to cooperate, you cannot be hypnotized. The subject is always in control of the session. Will I go to sleep or be unconscious? No. A subject will never be asleep or unconscious. Hypnosis is a state resembling sleep, but only physically. Mentally, the individual subject is aware of all that is happening. While you are in hypnosis you are in a state of increased awareness and alertness. All of your senses are heightened. The word “sleep” is used to bring about passive relaxation. Are there any side effects? Only positive side effects such as successfully eliminating unwanted habits, increased self confidence and the ability to relax and take control of your life. Nothing detrimental. How long can I stay in hypnosis? Since all hypnosis is self hypnosis, theoretically you could stay in a state of hypnosis for as long as you desired. Usually, self hypnosis sessions last between 15-30 minutes, while sessions with a hypnotist could last for an hour or more depending on the goal. How deep into hypnosis will I go? This depends strictly on your ability to relax. Most subjects experience deeper states of relaxation each time they are hypnotized or practice self hypnosis. Each time you enter the state of hypnosis, you increase your own ability to relax. Can I become dependent on hypnosis or the hypnotist? An individual could become dependent on a hypnotherapist in the same way that he or she could become dependent on a minister, teacher, or anyone else in the helping professions. The goal of the hypnotherapist is to help the subject utilize his or her own capabilities and potential independently for their benefit. Will one session change a bad habit? Hypnosis is a tool to assist an individual in eliminating a bad habit. It is not magic. It cannot always be expected that one session can overcome a habit that took years to develop, although numerous times it does happen. Depending on the individual, the suggestions may have to be reinforced periodically. Can the hypnotist keep me coming back? Since you are in control during the sessions and cannot be made to anything against your will, if the benefits didn’t meet your expectations, you would hardly want to keep seeing the hypnotherapist. On the other hand, if you found hypnosis beneficial, you would probably want to continue until you reached your goal. Can hypnosis be used for two or three problems at one time? If the goals you are working on are related, yes. If you started to bite your nails as a result of being overweight, then the nail biting would probably disappear as you began to lose the excess weight. If the goals were unrelated, it would be best to experience success with one goal before moving on to another.
